Content marketing is the only strategy that gets cheaper over time. An ad stops working the second you stop paying. A blog post published today can generate leads for the next 5 years. The math: 1 article per week × 6 months = 24 articles. Each article targets a keyword your customers search. In 6-12 months, those 24 articles generate 500-2,000 organic visits per month. At a 2% conversion rate: 10-40 leads per month. Cost: your time (or $200-500/article if outsourced). ROI: incalculable, because the content keeps working after you stop producing.
Month 1-2: Foundation (articles 1-8)
The pillar content strategy. Choose 2-3 "pillar" topics — broad subjects at the core of your business. A plumber: "plumbing maintenance," "plumbing emergencies," "bathroom renovation." A marketing agency: "lead generation," "content marketing," "social media strategy." For each pillar: write 1 comprehensive guide (2,000+ words, the definitive resource) + 2-3 supporting articles (800-1,200 words, specific subtopics). The guides link to the supporting articles and vice versa — creating a content cluster that Google loves.
Month 3-4: Expansion (articles 9-16)
The FAQ factory. Ask your sales team (or yourself): "What are the 10 questions customers ask most often?" Turn each into an article. "How much does X cost?" "How long does Y take?" "What's the difference between X and Y?" These articles rank for long-tail keywords, attract high-intent searchers, and reduce sales team workload (send the article instead of explaining from scratch). Plus: they position you as the transparent, helpful expert who answers questions others dodge.
Month 5-6: Authority (articles 17-24)
The opinion and data play. Original research, industry opinions, and trend analysis. "We surveyed 100 of our customers — here's what they said about X." "Why I think [industry trend] is overrated — and what to do instead." "The state of [your industry] in 2025: 5 trends that matter." This content gets shared, linked to, and cited — building domain authority that lifts all your other content in search rankings.
