Growth hacking isn't about hacks. It's about finding the one lever that moves your business fastest — then pulling it hard.
The term "growth hacking" was coined in Silicon Valley for startups with zero budget and infinite ambition. But the principles work even better for established small businesses: you already have customers, revenue, and a product that works. You just need to find the multiplier — the tactic that turns 1 customer into 3, or $1 of spend into $10 of revenue. These 10 tactics are sorted by effort-to-impact ratio: the first ones take 30 minutes, the last ones take a week. All cost under $100 to implement.
1. Turn your email signature into a billboard
You send 50-100 emails per day. Each one is a free impression. Add to your signature: a one-line value proposition + a link to your best content or offer. "PS: Download our free guide to [topic] — 2,000 businesses already have." Every team member does the same. A 10-person company sends 1,000 emails per week — that's 52,000 impressions per year, for free. Time: 10 minutes.
2. The exit-intent popup that captures 5% of leaving visitors
70% of website visitors leave and never return. An exit-intent popup (appears when the cursor moves toward the close button) offering a lead magnet captures 3-7% of those abandoning visitors. On a site with 1,000 monthly visitors: 30-70 new leads per month. Tool: Sumo or OptinMonster (free tiers available). The key: offer something genuinely valuable — a checklist, template, or guide — not "subscribe to our newsletter." Time: 30 minutes.
3. Reactivate dormant customers with one email
Your database has customers who bought once and disappeared. They already know and trust you — reactivation is 5x cheaper than acquisition. Send one email: "Hi [Name], it's been a while. We've added [new feature/product] since you were last here. Here's [offer] to welcome you back." Expected result: 10-15% open rate, 3-5% reconversion. On 500 dormant customers: 15-25 come back. Revenue impact: immediate. Time: 1 hour.
